Our Thoughts…

Upon first impression the ‘regular’ size looks a little small to me.  The brush shaped chew is easily flexed.  This is not a hard, long last chew by any means.  The softness of this chew gives me the concern that a dog may be more apt to engulf the treat rather than chew so dogs that normally hoover their food should be closely watched to prevent choking.

Years ago when the Greenie came on the market as the best, new dog chew out there I was always told they were unsafe so I was highly interested in reviewing this product.  In our general research of the product, some internet searches, we ran across a website called Optimum Choices.  The website shares stories of people who have lost, or almost lost, their companions to the green toothbrush shaped dog chew.

If you read the submitted first hand stories and news stories you’ll notice that they stop around 2006.  Greenies reformulated their chews after so many complaints and reported deaths at the hand of their ‘safe, digestible’ chews.  Part of the reformulation of the Greenies was making them flexible, allowing dogs to sink their teeth into the treat in hopes they’d be more interested in actually chewing rather than biting off.

Since 2006 there has only been one reported death from Greenies according to Optimum Choices.  I went a little further and did a search for more recent accounts and found ConsumerAffairs.com, a lot of dissatisfied customers based on potentially, no one mentions vet report, making their pets sick but I didn’t see anyone mention veterinarian diagnosed death due to consuming Greenies.

Our dogs didn’t display any ill side effects from just one chew but based on our findings, I doubt we’ll be giving our dogs anymore of the Greenies just in case.  There are plenty of alternatives that I can offer in place for piece of mind.

Received from Chewy.com in return for honest review, no compensation other than the product was given.

  1. Thankfully, dog dental chews can help with this. Not only can they freshen your pup s breath, but they can also help with gum health and reduce plaque and tartar build up.
